Arctic char is the jewel of mountain lakes and often requires a long hike to reach – but rewards you with stunning scenery, crystal-clear water and beautiful fish. It is more selective than trout and requires the right bait and patience.
Small fly (size 14–18), worm and mini-spinner are the best choices. Arctic char is more selective than trout and prefers natural and subtle bait. In clear water, natural and transparent colours often outperform bright neon colours.
Fish deep in summer – char move down to cool water (6–12 °C) and may hold at 10–30 metres depth. Spring and autumn fishing in shallower water is more accessible. Mountain season runs from snowmelt (June) until frost (September). Mountain lakes above 900–1200 m in Jotunheimen, Hardangervidda and Dovrefjell are excellent destinations.
